The purpose of this blog is to chronicle my upcoming year, from spring 2011 to summer 2012. I'll be fundraising for Insulindependence (iD) and fulfilling my responsibilities as a Testing Limits Captain, going on some hikes, running some races (hopefully a full marathon will be one of them), and continuing my undergraduate studies at Dartmouth. Trips to California, Florida, Seattle, and Louisiana are probable - not to mention the ten weeks I'll spend studying abroad in Morocco!
More details...
Summer 2011: After attending a leadership training program for iD captains in June, I'll start hosting monthly fitness events, or "Dawn Phenoms" for the diabetes community around the Washington, D.C. area. This is one of my responsibilities as a Testing Limits captain for iD. Eventually I'll also team up with and mentor a younger Type 1 diabetic in preparation for a wilderness expedition with Insulindependence in 2012.
Fall 2011: semester-long exchange program at Mystic Seaport in Mystic, CT. I'll be one of about 20 students from different colleges enrolled in the Williams-Mystic Maritime Studies program. We'll be studying maritime history, marine ecology and ocean conservation, public policy as it relates to the ocean, and even the literature of the sea. We'll also spend ten days sailing off the coast of Maine, a week in the Pacific Northwest studying the coasts of Washington and Oregon, and five days in Louisiana studying the Gulf coast. I can't wait.
I would love to run my first marathon this fall, too - but with all the traveling we'll be doing with W-M, it probably won't work out. I'm going to aim for the Carlsbad Marathon in January 2012, instead, which will give me more time to train; also, since I ran the Carlsbad half this year, I know it could work out logistically.
Winter '11-'12: Winter term at Dartmouth. Maybe this will be the term I finally learn to downhill ski.
Spring 2012: studying abroad in Fez, Morocco on a Dartmouth "FSP," or Foreign Study Program
